Koolputtersbier<\/p><\/div>\n

Recently tried Berrings koolputtersbier, made in a small brewpub in the north east of Belgium only for the Cafe ‘t Vijgeblad in Beringen. It’s named after the people that worked in the mines in this part of Belgium up until the 1970s – and, of course, it is as black as coffee. In saying that a Koolputter, from what I can tell, is the canary that used to be taken down the mines way back in the day.<\/p>\n

This is, in fact, a rare example of a Belgian style of stout. Very deep red if you hold it up to the light. It has a typical Belgian “Brussels Lace” that lasts. Smells of coffee and burnt malts, chocolate, and is very fresh overall. Taste is sweet, alcoholic, roasty and a light but fine bitterness follows – much less than Guinness.<\/p>\n

Drinkability is fine but be aware it’s 10% ABV so handle with care.<\/p>\n
